      THAT is a very interesting question. We have never seen it grown indoors and can find no information on growing it indoors either, however when we look at ours in indirecr bright light growing outdoors, then maybe. @@johnnyAGardening I just got one from the garden centre and its sitting beside me in its pot as I type this, but its only been indoors for a day. The fact that it can live in shadier places makes me wonder if it could be a houseplant but I don't know about its 1-humidity requirements, 2 -are the roots comfortable in a pot long term 3-Does it actually need a cooler dormant period that being indoors all the time would disrupt? Thanks for answering though.

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening 5 дней назад

      @@smithfield731 This one like moderate humidity, so away from heating and cooling ducts. A cooler dormant period would be advised. As for the root system, we have grown them in pots (24 inch - 60 cm) for 4 years and then divided repotted them. The rhizomes do spread so it depends on the soil, fertiliser etc. So in our opinion indoors you would get 2 - 3 years in the pot before needing to divide or repot them. Let us kn ow how you go with it if you try it..... And good luck, - nothing ventured nothing gained.

    Interested you say 'they like a sunny position' as the advice I was given that they should be grown in partial shade or shelter from the sun ( bulb dealer at a French plant sale). I am just wondering if they will succeed in pots in my slightly shaded conservatory or whether they really need to be out in the open in the sunshine. What do you think?

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening 20 дней назад

      This all depends on the intensity of the sun. Many species naturally grow on eastern facing slopes, good morning sun and some shade in the afternoon. . They will grow in any position with a good amount of light, in cooler climates, full sun. In hotter climates some protection from the heat of the afternoon sun. So slight shade YES they will grow. We have E.vandermerwei and it grows in just a little afternoon shade, but good morning sun. A dry winter is important as is some summer watering

    Perhaps this is a silly question, but why do you recommend normal dense potting soil instead of a grittier succulent-style soil? I've seen the latter recommended more often, and I'm trying to decide whether to re-pot my 2-3 year old Portulacaria from its current (dense) soil into something more gritty & loose. EDIT: I'm assuming this is because you're propagating new cuttings; maybe the idea is to move it to a different soil after it's taken root? If it makes any difference - my bonsai is usually indoors (don't have a yard), and I currently water every 1-2 weeks. Thanks!

    • @johnnyAGardening
      @johnnyAGardening 22 дня назад

      As long as the soil, and the pot, drain reasonably well then it's your watering regime rather than the soil that is important. So a regular potting mix, not a dense one,, SHOULD drain well. A pot with adequate drainage holes will drain well. We tend to moderate our watering to suit the plant. In the garden this is different, you do need a free drianing soil as you can't control rain. Its alays a wet/dry watering regime for us. So, watering every 1 -2 weeks, indoors, in a pot with good drainage holes a normal potting mix should be OK..

      @johnnyAGardening 24 дня назад

      We place them in good filtered light and try for around 20 - 25c daytime so 70 -78f. Although they will strike in cooler temps, just slower. And yes, for just about every plant, direct to soil is better than water in the long term.

    Hi Johnny. Thanks for the video. I use the grit that feel heavy in small pot. Is that too heavy for the roots? I have a few died, with the top look fine but then eventually the top just separated from roots. Not sure if that’s the issues. Thanks in advance

      It sounds like the soil/potting mix is not draining quickly, so the mix may be holding too much moisture. Use a lighter mix with more drainage material.

    Loved this video. We bought a house with many, many rose bushes and I'm afraid of messing them up, Your information gives me the courage to get out there and clean up the deadheads! Thank you.

      Hello Jill, roses are remarkably resilient and respond well to pruning. This video on pruning standard roses may be of interest - ruclips.net/video/oHUim4uLTUs/видео.html.

    I find that, in order to best avoid ANY rotting of cuttings, cacti. young plants or “specialty” succulents-no matter if they're leaf propagates or stem cuttings, or even just mature specimens-dried sphagnum moss is ideal. It can be simply ripped up into smaller chunks by hand, wrapped around the succulent, or simply lay the cuttings or leaves on top of the dry moss. Then I may even go further and chop the moss with scissors first, into finer, porous particles. Moss is great for avoiding rot because when the time comes to water, or mist your cuttings, it soaks the water up just enough, and yet it evaporates at just the right speed to avoid rot. It’s perfectly porous and just the right amount of organic matter to stimulate succulent roots. As a matter of fact, and I am not alone in thinking this, many succulents, Peperomias, and other plants can spend their entire lives in pure sphagnum moss. They’ll have perfect drainage, aeration and moisture control, with just the right amount of nitrogen breaking down. If evaporating is a concern, I also recommend a top-layer of gravel, decomposed granite, Akadama, or even just pumice, for plants potted in sphagnum… either way, topdressing for looks is still possible even with moss as a substrate ;-)
